Leg Lengthening Costs Around the World
Leg lengthening surgery (LL) has generally been considered dangerous. It is an invasive surgery that involves breaking your bones and forcing them to fuse together as they are pulled apart.
Is it safe? Well, I am not completely sure. Many people have this surgery performed without complications. But it really probably depends on where you have the surgery performed. The problem is the best places tend to be the most expensive. So we tend to choose cheaper methods that may not really be the best for us.
To increase 5cm (50mm), you could expect to be going from surgery to walking in 6 months. The distraction process is usually done at 1mm a day. Blood vessels and nerves would go slowly. Your options are to either lengthen your tibia or your femur. Some doctors advise you to do lengthening on both at the same time while some do not allow that.
Spending about $30,000-$50,000 USD for just 5cm seems excessive. I am short. I would still be short after paying $30,000 USD and gaining the 2 inches. But at least I would be half way to my goal of a 4 inch increase.
Here is a tabulated list of countries and cost.
I noticed that many of these locations do not cover the charge for complications. That seems unfair. They perform the procedure, it causes a complication, but they charge you to fix the complication.
If the doctor says you can get 10cm of lengthening, they are probably talking about lengthening the tibia and the femur simultaneously or even independently. In those cases, the cost is doubled.
So we are looking at about 6 months of lost time where you are in a wheelchair. Expenses of about $40,000 USD to $70,000 USD. And only a gain of about 5cm. For some people, this is worth it.
Surgery Cost in China
The best deal of all these countries is China because they take care of all the costs and free room stay in the hospital during the entire surgery. When I read up on them, I was excited. I emailed them and they confirmed that all costs were inclusive of even problems that may occur during the operation and healing phases. But lately, I realized that it is illegal.
9/29/11: My goal is to contact every hospital that I have listed on this site to get a rough idea as to costs, height increases, and timelines. I will post the email replies that I receive here on this site so it saves you the effort in having to do the same thing.
